How To Choose Between Oak Hardwood Flooring And The Many Alternatives

Oak hardwood flooring can prove to be an ideal way to add character and durability to your home. A good hardwood floor can increase the sale value of your home, and at the same time increase your chances of a quick sale. It is more than likely that whatever money you invest in a floor will come back to you with an extra return, as natural hardwood floors are in great demand. Oak hardwood flooring comes in different grades, with the clear grade being the most expensive, and the highest quality. The select grade is also high quality, and is an easier wood to work with. Further down the scale, the number one common and number two common varieties will have considerably more imperfections, but will still retain most of the functionality of the higher grade wood.

Maple hardwood flooring is another alternative, and has the advantage of being easily nailed down. The wood is resistant to splitting, which makes it easy to install. It is not an easy wood to saw, though, so you will need to have sharp equipment if you intend to try this. Maple can also be a difficult wood to work with if you want to achieve a finish different from the natural or standard one. It does not take stain evenly, which can lead to a blotchy and flawed appearance.

Walnut hardwood flooring can appear very natural and satisfying, especially if you can select the higher grades. The highest quality walnut is of a dark chocolate color, which can blend well with many different styles and finishes. Walnut is a great wood to work with, as it is soft and responds well to sharp tools. It is also time effective, as it does not need stain for a good looking finish.

Imported wood can give your home a very unusual look, but not a garish or startling one. This could pay off handsomely if you were to try to sell your home.

In choosing between traditional oak hardwood flooring and the other alternatives, you need to consider the main reason why you want a hardwood floor in the first place, and your own skill and ability. If you are looking for something which is striking and different, maybe one of the imported varieties will be best for you. If your woodworking skills are not great, choose a wood that is easy to work with, and one which does not need a coat of staining to be effective. If you want the traditional and durable, there is a good case for sticking with oak hardwood flooring.
